There are 4 formats: D5, D9, D10, D18.

A DVD-5 DVD-Video disc is single layer/single sided and will hold nominally 133 minutes of high quality MPEG-2 encoded video, together with three surround-sound audio channels and four subtitle channels.

A DVD-9 disc is dual layer, single sided, which hold 240 minutes of continuous video.

A DVD-10 disc is single layer/double sided and can thus hold 266 minutes of video, but the disc needs to be turned over to play the other side.

A DVD-18 disc is dual layer, double sided and can hold 480 minutes of video. Most DVD is D9 or D5 format.
